The Gulf has reclaimed more land in a generation than most regions do in a century, and the machinery that does it is consumed by the work. Cutter heads, teeth and suction mouths run through sand, coral and rock, and hard-surfacing around the intake is standard practice simply to keep the mouth serviceable. Above the waterline, class-society survey regimes — ABS, DNV, LR, BV — add their own inspection and documentation requirements on top of the repair itself.
